Do tv shows somehow tally how many people watch?

Because they make money off of commercials paying them per second per viewer. So how do they do it? Sometimes I don't want to watch a show, but I do anyways because it's like charity. Like right now im watching Bear Grylls. If I stop watching doesn't he lose money. It's not much but still I kinda would feel bad if I didn't watch.
