Why did the Arizona Cardinals play in the NFC East?

The Saints used to be in the NFC west if I recall. The Cardinals used to be St Louis Cardinals so that is much more east then they are now. Im 34 and have watched the NFL for 25 years. It was much better in the 80s and early 90s than it is now.
