How long after a wedding ceremony can you have a reception?

My best friends daughter got married at the county courthouse at the end of April and want to plan a big wedding and reception in 2 years when they finish college. They want to have family and friends witness their marriage. Is that too long to wait? Would a reception in a few months be more reasonable or should we suggest that they just do a vow renewal when they finish college?
