Can I use a tampon if it is my first period?

I am 13 and just got my period for the first time 4 days ago. I really want to use tampons but I'm afraid its too close to the end of my cycle so it will be painful. I don't have any lubricants to help it go in easier. Is this a bad idea and should i wait longer? Because i want to be able to swim and such without my period getting in the way. I also dont want to try menstrual cups. please help
