How to get my two cats to like each other?

I have a female cat who is about four years old. She has had one litter of kittens and was subsequently deed. We have had her since she was a young kitten. She spends the evenings with us in the house and sleeps in the laundry. Recently we got a new kitten he is male and about nine weeks old. He is very friendly to people and wants to be friendly to the older cat. But the older one stalks him and hisses at him, and occasionally chases him off. It would be nice if she would accept him and even play with him. I even thought she might mother him and teach him things like hunting mice and climbing trees, etc. How can I help them to get along?
